INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Sept. 2, 2022) – The East 71st Street trail is expected to reopen later today for the Labor Day weekend and close temporarily next week to install a bicycle and pedestrian protection system under I-465.

The protection system will greatly reduce the time the multi-use trail is closed during Clear Path construction. Long-term closures were anticipated earlier in the project. Installation of the protection system is expected to close the multi-use trail from Tuesday, Sept. 6 through Friday, Sept. 9. The protection system will look similar to scaffolding installed over city sidewalks during work on high-rise buildings.

Crews are widening the existing bridge over East 71st Street to support more lanes on I-465. Cranes installed structural steel beams this week along the west side of the bridge.

East 71st Street remains closed to car and truck traffic, and the detour follows Shadeland Avenue, 75th Street and Binford Boulevard.
