Traffic Alert: 71st Street and Trail to Close for One Week

Closures will accommodate bridge demolition

INDIANAPOLIS (Jan. 22, 2025) – Clear Path crews will begin demolishing the old I-465 South bridge over East 71st Street next week. As part of this work, East 71st Street and the adjacent trail is scheduled to be closed for one week, from 7 a.m. Thursday, January 23, to 7 a.m. Thursday, January 30. Drivers should utilize 75th Street as a detour for the duration of this closure.

These closures are needed for the reconstruction of the I-465 bridge over 71st Street and to make sure the area is clear of motorists and pedestrians. Traffic was recently shifted to a rehabilitated bridge late last year, moving drivers onto new pavement and allowing crews to begin constructing new lanes on I-465 South.

The closures are weather dependent. Actual dates and anticipated work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen activities occur.

Indiana Safe Zones Reminder

The INDOT Worksite speed control pilot program, known as Safe Zones, has been deployed in the current Clear Path I-465/I-69 construction zone on the northeast side of Indianapolis. The pre-enforcement period for safe zones began this week.

Here’s how Indiana Safe Zones works:

  • Signs are posted as motorists enter and exit worksites notifying them that speed limits are being monitored by an automated system.
  • The system will monitor the speed of vehicles using speed timing devices as they pass through work zones. When a vehicle is determined to be traveling 11 mph or more than the posted speed limit, the system will capture an image of the vehicle’s rear license plate. After data is validated, violations will be certified and issued to the owner of the vehicle by mail.
  • After the pre-enforcement period ends, the first violation will result in a zero-fine warning, the second in a $75 civil fine, and every violation thereafter a fine of $150. In accordance with the statute, collected fines will go into the state’s General Fund.
  • Workers must be present at the site at the time of the event for violations to be valid.
  • No violations will be issued during the pre-enforcement period, but courtesy notices will be sent via email. The pre-enforcement period will last a minimum of 30 days.
